Michael’s Early Working Life

Michael’s first foray into the world of business started with his executive traineeship at Myer Melbourne Limited in 1961 as a part-time accountant. Learning how to manage money clearly triggered Michael’s appetite for more, and in 1966 he purchased a half share of a footwear factory. He took control of that business eventually.

Make Business, not War

While the rest of the world was into the “love, not war” movement in the early 70s, Michael’s focus was clearly business oriented. He purchased a one-third share in Compudata Pty Ltd (a computer service bureau) in 1970 and took over the role of Marketing Director for 18 month. He then successfully sold the business to Computer Resources Limited.

Bitten by the Travelling Bug and First JV

Following the sale of the business Michael toured Australia, and eventually settled in Adelaide. In 1972 he joined Security Life Assurances Ltd, specialising in the design and implementation of human risk management strategies for public companies and high net worth individuals.

In 1980 Michael established Lumley Harrison Limited in partnership with UK-based Edward Lumley Group. The Sydney-based business specialised in the design of executive compensation programs for the public company market. He sold his interest in 1982.

Million Dollar Round Table Recognition

At around the same time Michael received international recognition as one of the world’s top sales people. This led to the achievement of a life membership for the Million Dollar Round Table. Michael also qualified for the Top of the Table - a rare achievement reserved for few people worldwide.

Michael’s Banking Venture

Australia’s first private bank, Harrisons & Broadlands Limited, was founded by Michael in 1985. It was a joint ownership with NZI Securities (Western) Limited, part of the New Zealand Insurance Group. The company ceased its trade in 1990.

Banker to Business Strategist

In 1992 Michael decided it was time to help other businesses with his extensive knowledge in sales, marketing and business strategy. He established Strategies Plus Concepts Pty Ltd, a business consultancy that specialises in designing growth strategies for businesses operating in the services sector; principally in financial and professional services.

Accomplished Author

Over the years Michael has authored several books; Ready, Aim, Sell!, the Consultants Toolkit, the Mini Guide to business series, Diamond Selling, How to Turn Questions into Cash and numerous articles about business. He is frequently invited to present his sales and business strategies as a keynote speaker to audiences in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
